GRUMGORE'S NOTES
By Mike Marko
BRIEF HISTORY
I have been playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WHFB) since October 1994. And I have only played orcs and goblins. I started
playing WHFB because I was looking for a wargame that would work well in a fantasy setting for my Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
WHFB was the best set of rules out at the time. I selected orcs because as the game master, orcs were my favorite monster (right
after dragons, of course). But I quickly grew to love the WHFB background and found myself completely immersed into the hobby.
In addition to the many small tournaments I won, I can boast of winning Best Overall at four out of four Rogue Trader
Tournaments over the past two years and Best General at the 2000 Chicago Grand Tournament (GT). I have also run almost a dozen WHFB
tournaments ranging from eight to forty participants. When I used to live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, myself and Chris McLauchlan
developed the WarCon tournament structure that soon was quickly copied by many other tournaments. Jervis Johnson gave us credit for
some of the tournament ideas that he borrowed for the revised GT format. It is also very interesting that the recent RTT format is
very similar to the WarCon tournament format Chris and I created over five years ago.
When I moved to Wisconsin I discovered that the WHFB gaming community was scattered to the winds after the release of
fifth edition. Over the course of a year, I developed a gaming league of excellent generals whom displayed the best sportsmanship
of any other players I have had the pleasure to meet.
